Voter Registration Process

Voter Identification Number

An individual who applies to register to vote must provide a voter identification number on the registration application. The voter identification number is the individual’s Indiana driver’s license number, or if an individual does not have an Indiana driver’s license, the individual must provide the last four (4) digits of the individual’s Social Security number when the individual registers to vote.

Requirements for Mail-In Registrations Forms

As of January 1, 2003, Indiana law requires, that an individual who submits an application to register to vote by mail and has not previously voted in a general election in the county as of the date the registration is received must provide additional identification documentation to the county voter registration office prior to voting.

Mail forms to:

Board of Voter Registration

Registration Documentation

The documentation required may be either:

  1. A current and valid photo identification.
  2. A current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or government document that shows the name and address of the voter (at address shown on the voter’s registration).

Identification documents must accompany the registration when mailed into the county voter registration office, or brought, in person, to the county voter registration office at a later date.

The county voter registration office shall indicate on each precinct’s poll list whether any voter on the list is required to provide additional identification documents prior to voting in person or by absentee ballot.
